Greenlight Electricity Centre is a proposed 1,864 MW gas-fired combined cycle power generation facility and data centre complex in the Industrial Heartland of Alberta.
The Greenlight Electricity Centre is a proposed 1,864 MW gas-fired combined cycle power generation facility with carbon capture optionality that can accommodate a co-located 1,864 MW data centre complex. With its strategic location, high-efficiency power generation, and future-ready infrastructure, Greenlight Electricity Centre is positioned to be a cornerstone of Alberta’s energy future — supporting the province’s digital transformation and economic growth.
Project Details
Project Need
Greenlight will address the Province of Alberta’s request for $100 billion of investment in AI technology to drive innovation, create jobs and diversify its economy. This demand surge is driven by advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing, and digital transformation, with global data centre electricity consumption projected to double by 2027, reaching 2.6% of global electricity usage.
Designed to meet the increasing electricity needs driven by the province’s growing data centre industry, the facility will be developed in modular phases of approximately 466 MW each. Initial nameplate design of 1,864 MW will allow for scalable construction based on market demand. The power generation facility is currently is progressing through the interconnection process, permitting, design, and contracting.
Local Economic Activity
The construction and operations of Greenlight will play an important role in the local economy by providing well-paying jobs that will benefit the local and Indigenous communities. It will utilize local businesses and suppliers and provide additional tax revenue to Sturgeon County.
The Project is anticipated to employ approximately 1,500 workers at the peak of construction, with an expected work effort of almost 9,000,000 worker-hours in the local area.
Environmental Benefits
Greenlight will be one of Alberta’s most efficient generating facilities and is committed to minimizing environmental impacts through best practices and rigorous management programs.
The focus will be to meet or exceed industry standards and environmental regulations, ensuring responsible power generation.
The Project is being designed and will be operated to minimize potential environmental effects while supporting Alberta’s efforts to diversify and clean its power production mix.
As part of the regulatory application, comprehensive environmental studies and assessments will be conducted, including:
- Air Quality
- Noise Assessment
- Field Surveys
- Carbon Capture
